No doubt you’ve heard the crazy numbers: we all spend about 33 years of our lives in bed. It’s why we’re so passionate about helping clients find the right mattress for themselves and their families, because what you sleep on plays a big role in the quality of your sleep and your life.
A big part of picking the right mattress is understanding how they’re made. So today, we’re breaking down latex mattresses and comparing them to memory foam mattresses. For many people, a hypoallergenic latex mattress will be the better option. So let’s jump in!
Understanding Latex Mattresses
In general, latex mattresses provide greater elasticity than other mattresses, and because they are hypoallergenic, they make great options for anyone with allergies. They also offer a more responsive, traditional feel with better support compared to other mattresses, without motion transfer to your partner.
Latex mattresses are available in natural, synthetic, and blended options. Latex itself is a natural form of rubber that is made by processing the milky liquid (ie, the sap) from a rubber tree. It is produced primarily in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. We’ll cover more about organic rubber tree farming below.
There are two methods to manufacture latex mattresses – Dunlop and Talalay (learn more about these latex manufacturing processes here).
Because the latex derivative is highly conforming, it’s a versatile material used in a variety of applications in bedding and mattresses. It results in a very temperature-neutral sleeping surface due to its open cell structure and perforations.
Latex Mattresses Versus Memory Foam
Natural latex is generally the better choice if you prefer a more traditional yet still highly conforming feel.
Compared to memory foam, latex does not exhibit any ‘memory’ characteristics. Instead, it retains integrity better and responds immediately. This is because latex has less ‘hysteresis,’ or lagging effect, than memory foam. An easy way to think about it: you sleep ON latex and IN memory foam.
Latex also offers the unique benefit of decreased motion transfer. Unlike memory foam – which needs to be activated by body heat and then allows your body to sink into a divot – latex mattresses offer a more consistent feel. Additionally, latex mattresses have a higher resistance to body impressions and caving.
The result? You’ll feel your partner kicking a lot less (although we can’t promise anything about hogging the blankets!).
You’ll feel your partner’s movement less on a latex mattress
Latex Mattresses Versus Innerspring Mattresses
When moving from a spring mattress to a latex one, you’ll feel a much higher level of pressure point relief. Furthermore, a latex mattress will have a much longer lifespan than an innerspring mattress, with a realistic life expectancy of more than 25 years.
Who Are Latex Mattresses Best For?
Latex mattresses make great choices for anyone who wants the best value for their money, because they have a 2-3 times longer life-span than coil spring or memory foam mattresses.
Latex mattresses are also great for anyone needing a cooler sleep, because latex is temperature neutral (see the best mattresses to help you beat the heat here).
Latex also works best on lifestyle adjustable beds. They contour to the exact shape of the adjustable base in a way that foam and spring mattresses cannot provide.
